Laboratoire de Pharmacognosie Paris Descartes

The Laboratory of « Pharmacognosy, Chemistry of Natural Substances, Electrochemistry”  is located at the Faculty of Pharmacy of Paris, a historical building dating from 1882. The team is a part of a joint research unit of CNRS, UMR 8638 CiTCOM, a multidisciplinary group possessing many research facilities (two NMR spectrometers, HPLC-UV and HPLC-MS apparatus).  The group involves 20 researchers which cover various aspects of natural products chemistry with an emphasis for (i) metabolite extraction/structure elucidation from plants selected according to their use in traditional medicine and (ii) medicinal chemistry directly derived from or inspired by natural products (semi-synthesis, total synthesis). Over the past ten years, the laboratory developed a strong expertise in medicinal chemistry in collaboration with an industrial partner. The permanent need for new hits in medicinal chemistry programs prompts us to initiate metabolic profiling at plant organ level to support the discovery of new metabolites. Green and sustainable extraction methods such as speed extractor, Centrifugal Partition Chromatography (CPC) are also used for extraction and separation methods.

Besides, the Laboratory possesses worldwide connections with other countries (Greece, Cameroun, Madagascar, Viet Nam, Thailand) culminating in several fruitfull collaborations. In addition, some members are permanent experts for the French food and drug sanitary agencies (Anses) in the fields of natural metabolites and bioactive botanicals. The Laboratory has also a strong  expertise in quality control methods for herbal materials.
