The University of Tübingen has a long history in natural product chemistry and biology. Having been established in 1964 at Tübingen University, microbial natural product research has a long and successful track record. This expertise was constantly expanded and complemented, so that today teams from Microbiology, Pharmacy, Chemistry and the Medical Department cover a wide range of natural products research. Germany has a long history in natural product chemistry including total synthesis and biosynthesis, especially from microbial sources, and also on chemical ecology which has been traditionally associated to natural product chemistry. Today, research on all aspects of natural products at the interface between chemistry and the bio- and pharmaceutical sciences, catalysis, material sciences and energy are regarded to be key topics of chemical research in Germany.
